Tane mahuta

This tree is named Tane Mahuta, after the maori god of the forests, it is the largest surviving specimen of it's species (kauri) in New Zealand.
There were many larger trees of this type but these were logged during early European settlement. Tane mahuta is about two thousand years old, and his trunk is about 14 metres around. It's very difficult to capture the scale of this tree in pictures.
